В 1997 Saab 9-5 сменил на конвейере Saab 9000. Первоначально автомобиль продавался только с кузовом седан, но осенью 1998 в продажу поступил и универсал. Модель модернизировали в 2001 и 2005 годах. Новое поколение Saab 9-5 ожидается в 2010 году. Автомобиль создан на одной платформе с автомобилем Opel Vectra. По некоторым узлам унифицирован с Opel Omega. В частности, использовался двигатель V6 с «опелевскими» корнями. Шведы оснастили этот трехлитровый двигатель системой Ecopower с оригинальным асимметричным турбонаддувом низкого давления и четырьмя клапанами на цилиндр. Как и четырехцилиндровые силовые агрегаты— 2,0 л и 2,3 л— V6 получил фирменную систему управления Trionic 7. Причем двухлитровый выпускался в двух версиях, различающихся по давлению наддува и, соответственно, мощности. Более скромная (0,4 бар, 150 л.с.) имела индекс «t», а та, что помощнее (0,95 бар, 185-192 л.с. в зависимости от страны) — «Turbo». Также в двух версиях существует и двигатель 2,3 л: 170 л.с. и 230 л.с. Последний предназначен исключительно для самой динамичной модификации Aero. VIN SAAB.
